Where to dive in Thailand
Thailand has some of the best dive sites and is a worldly famous destination to learn how to dive and explore the underwater.
From novice divers to the most experienced, everyone can find something of interest. Thailand is bordered by 2 seas: the Gulf of Thailand on the East and the Andaman Sea on the West. Thailand for the best or the worse has a very strong tourism infrastructure able to cater to the large number of divers flowing into the country every year.
When to dive in Thailand?
Being a tropical country, Thailand has a dry and a rainy season, to make it simple, it rains on the West coast during the Summer (May- October) and on the East during the Winter.
Where to dive in Thailand?
I suppose it depends what you are looking for.
If you don't mind crowded boats and waters, Koh tao is probably the place to get the cheap diving and certifications.
Pattaya is the most accessible from Bangkok in just an hour drive and is quite good for wreck diving but don't expect a good visibility or you will be disappointed.
Incontestably, the best dive spots are to be found on the West side due to a better visibility and wealth in marine life. To go diving on the Andaman Sea, you can take day trips from Phuket, Koh Lanta or Phiphi or board a liveaboard for a few days.
Liveaboard allow you to be on the dive sites before the "day trippers" hence on less busy dive sites and it gives you the chance to dive up to 4 times in the day and to experience early morning dives (when fishes are the most active into their feeding frenzy) and night dives (when you can see very different species from the day dives).
In addition to having better dives, you also have a lot better time before, between and after them.
Why would you sit on a small speed boat waiting for the next dive to come when you could be relaxing in a hamac reading a good book. You want to rest, go to your confortable cabin and bed for a real nap. Hungry? If the great food we serve 4 times a day is not enough, plenty of snack, fresh fruits and drinks are awaiting you in the shaded living area. Still a lot of energy? Take the kayak around the island and hop on a beach. Liveaboards are more comfortable and a lot more FUN!!!

Best way to go dive in Thailand: Take a Liveaboard cruise
Where do these liveaboards leave from to dive in Thailand?
The best dive sites in Thailland are in the Similan islands and Surin Islands national Parks, including the top 10 rated Richelieu Rock.
Most big liveaboards live from Phuket and some from Kao Lak. For those who want to leave the hordes, Ranong is a more quiet port of departure. You can experiment the REAL Thailand in Ranong and on one of the last unspoint islands in Thailand: Koh Phayam (people say it looks just like Phi Phi island before the movie "the beach" made it too famous... )
Our boat, MV Thai Sea welcomes up to 12 divers in comfort, you will dive in small groups (no more than 4 with an instructor) and you will visit less visited dive sites in the Surin islands for example which are very rarely visited by "crowded boats".
Ranong is very easy to reach. It is on the way from Bangkok to Phuket, which is quite convenient for whoever goes around the country by bus, you can hop on a flight directly from Bangkok or take a train until chumpon and then a short bus ride.
