Join one of our Burma cruises and dive in the Burma Banks!
125 km offshore from the southern town of Kawthaung, the secrets of the Burma Banks are waiting to be discovered. On the edge of the central Myanmar continental shelf and hidden in the depths of international waters (in an economic zone claimed by Myanmar) lie a collection of undersea mountains little known to humans. Starting at depths of over 300 m, these massive sand dunes rise all the way up to a diveable zone 15-30 m below the surface of this unassuming sector of the open ocean.
There are 6 documented peaks—Big, Coral, Heckford, Rainbow, Roe, and Silvertip banks—and countless unnamed peaks that start even deeper than 300 m and rise to depths that are too deep for recreational divers. Thankfully the visibility is so good that you can usually still see them from above even if they are too deep to actually get up close and personal. Being so tricky to access, they are veritable uncharted territory, yours to discover.
Mergui Archipelago

Until the ’90s, the Burma Banks were only known to some fishermen and boat captains, but their exact location remained undocumented. Pioneering scuba divers at this time couldn’t quell their curiosity and began visiting these sites more regularly. Before then, tourism was not widely practiced in Myanmar, but with the surrounding countries becoming more and more trodden by foreign visitors, it became an increasingly popular destination for those seeking an exclusive diving experience.
The banks have become more easily accessible recently, but there are still roads less traveled that continue to beguile the most adventurous. The scuba diving world is notoriously curious, and some very lucky divers have been able to venture out into the Indian Ocean to experience something that is still fairly unique at the Burma Banks. The Smiling Seahorse is the leading specialist in diving in Burma and is one of the very few diving companies that venture that far out to sea to these truly one-of-a-kind dive sites.
The Mergui Archipelago is already a place where you can enjoy the thrill of diving all by yourself at sites that few divers have ever visited, but the Burma Banks take exclusivity to another level.
We visit the Banks on every cruise, weather permitting. It takes a whole night of travel to reach them from North Twin, the closest dive site where we usually dive before heading out to the Banks. To make the long journey worthwhile, we spend an entire day diving these sites—and sometimes even two days when conditions are spectacular—before returning overnight to Mergui Archipelago.

Don’t go to bed too early during these crossings, as one experience you might never forget is seeing a pod of dolphins bathed in bioluminescence at the bow of the boat.
During a black moon, we often treat our guests to a bit of a show by stopping in the middle of the endless sea and turning off the engine and all the lights on the boat. With no sound or light pollution, we get cozy on the top deck and gaze up at one of the most brilliant displays of stars you will ever have the chance to see.
Approaching the Burma Banks is eerily serene. Surrounded by an endless, unobstructed sea with not another boat in sight, you will feel like a Renaissance explorer sailing toward the edge of the world. You may not even notice that you’ve arrived, as the only hint that there is anything around is the shimmer of the schools of fish visible from the surface.
The season for diving in Myanmar is from October until May, but we prefer visiting the Burma Banks mid-season when the weather is nothing but clear blue skies and mirror-esque seas. In Myanmar, we experience predictable 6-hour tidal changes that affect the currents based on the phases of the moon. In the Burma Banks, however, currents are far less tidal and much more variant, as they are so far offshore. The mildest currents flow during the mid-moon, and they get significantly stronger during the full moon and new (black) moon. Water temperatures are consistently between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius, and the water clarity here is regularly up to a staggering 40 m of visibility. At this particular site this is especially useful, as you can still see the features clearly while hovering several meters above and don’t have to forfeit precious bottom time. In February, there is commonly a coral blooming event, which can reduce the visibility but make the chances of an encounter with large pelagic species skyrocket.
The Burma Banks are particularly special to this region for several reasons, and this makes this a great site to throw a little variety into your cruise. Species of both marine creatures and coral found abundantly here are not found commonly in other nearby diving destinations.
In the rest of Myanmar and the Mergui archipelago, the predominant coral varieties are soft and full of color and fluffy textures. At the Burma Banks, you will find many more hard corals than anywhere else in the area. There are barrel sponges so big you could sit inside of them and enormous coral bummies that would make a bus look like a child’s toy. The topography here is really very different from anything else you will see throughout your dives and will set a magnificent background for marine life encounters. As the banks are really large underwater sand dunes made up of endless coral-covered sloping sides and topped with a vast plateau, there are no walls or drop-offs, making them fairly unique as dive sites.

Another special feature of the Burma Banks is the regular sighting of several species of sharks thanks to its exposed open ocean location. There are good chances to spot sharks on many other dive sites in the area, but none are quite as impressive as this shark lover’s paradise.
Since we have begun visiting more regularly, we have spotted 9 different species of sharks here, including silvertip, whitetip, and blacktip reef sharks; nurse sharks; leopard sharks; whale sharks; and even the more elusive tiger shark.
Considering the particularities of the banks, there are some procedures that we would like you to be aware of. Because of unpredictable currents and the fact that we are in the open ocean with no land or boats anywhere near, it is incredibly important to carry an SMB with you on any dive here.

Make sure to strictly follow the buddy pair system in this amusement park. These currents can spread a group apart quite easily, so make sure to stay close enough to your buddy to reach them quickly if you ever get separated from your guide.
We often try to plan the dives to maximize bottom time and safety here. The first two dives we often descend into the blue a little ways from the banks and allow the currents to carry us back to the main site. It can be quite exhilarating to know that there are several hundred meters of water below you, but it can also be disorienting. Make sure to focus on a reference like your rising bubbles to combat vertigo, and most importantly, watch your depths!
On subsequent dives we often descend over the plateaus on the top of the banks, which are shallower and a bit more friendly to dwindling bottom times after multiple dives. The visibility allows us to hover several meters over the bottom and pick and choose which features you would like to descend to get a closer look. We love bouncing from bommie to bommie to peek at a nurse shark, turtle, or ray hiding underneath.

My diving cruise with The Smiling Seahorse was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Everything was extremely well organized and seamless, making the entire vacation completely stress-free and enjoyable. The crew was exceptional — professional, friendly, attentive, and always making sure everyone felt comfortable and safe. The food was amazing throughout the trip, with great variety and quality at every meal. The boat itself is excellent: very comfortable, well maintained, and thoughtfully designed for divers. The cabins are spacious and comfortable, and the common areas are very well organized, giving everyone plenty of space to relax between dives. What truly made the experience unforgettable was the incredible selection of dive spots. Every dive offered something special, with beautiful marine life, stunning coral reefs, and perfectly planned itineraries. Overall, this was a full enjoyment vacation and one of the best liveaboard experiences I’ve had. I highly recommend The Smiling Seahorse to anyone looking for a perfectly organized diving adventure with a fantastic crew and unforgettable diving.Posted on Google![]()

Another vote for the Smiling Seahorse - it's a very good boat. Purpose built for serious diving, the thought and care put into it by its owner and crew really shows. Everything you need is available, easy to access, well maintained and functional, without anything extraneous or funky. There is a devotion to diving, to underwater photography, to the marine life, to the history and natural history of the Similan Islands and Burma, to the guest experience and developing our skills. Our group did the week-long South to North Andaman Sea trip in January 2026, and each day was better than the one before. The diving is exceptional, with healthy corals and masses and masses of fish, even before we got to the climax of Richelieu Rock. They include an black water dive on each trip, a truly unique opportunity. We received tremendous support from the dive guides and the crew alike, who gracefully and respectfully accommodated everyone's needs. Even the little things - one of the deck crew noticed that the little strap connecting the dust cap to my regulator was close to breaking off and offered to repair it. He did a beautiful job and I'll be reminded of his generosity and kindness each time I dive that reg. Our guide, James, has years of experience, like many masters, conveyed his knowledge with simplicity and clarity (and humor - whew!). I became a better diver following his example. I keep remembering the happy anticipation of standing at the stern, all kitted up, waiting for the captain's signal to jump. Next trip - Burma. The cabins are simple and comfortable, although you may want to bring a pad if you're not a fan of firm beds. A/C and hot water in each cabin - all good. Everyone in our group, from the experts with many thousands of dives to the recently certified, to a couple of non-diving spouses, loved the Smiling Seahorse!Posted on Google![]()

We had an amazing time on the Smiling Seahorse liveaboard in Thailand. Everything was well organized, relaxed, and very professional. Our dive guide Julien was fantastic. He showed us beautiful dive sites and even pointed out tiny nudibranchs we would never have seen ourselves. His eye for detail made every dive special. The food was excellent, and the crew was incredibly friendly and helpful, especially when assisting with dive gear. Overall, a wonderful experience – It was our 2nd trip and we will definitely come again!Posted on Google![]()

An Unforgettable Week Underwater! I just wrapped up a phenomenal week-long liveaboard trip in the Similan Islands with The Smiling Seahorse team, and I cannot recommend them enough. The dives were absolutely gorgeous, but what really set the experience apart was Julian’s amazing spotting skills—he has an incredible eye and made sure we didn't miss a thing. The entire crew was attentive, professional, and always right there to assist with all of our needs, making the whole week completely seamless. On top of the world-class diving, the food was fantastic. Everything was incredibly tasty, and they offered a great variety of dishes that really hit the spot after a long day in the water. Five stars across the board—if you're looking for a top-tier liveaboard operation, this is the team to go with!Posted on Google![]()

I went for a 9 day dive safari in Myanmar, the mergui archipelago, with the smiling seahorse. One of the unique experiences I had. My first (and second and third) Blackwater dive, dives I will never forget. The staff are wonderful, the dive guides are amazing, they actually care and put in a lot of extra effort and the ship crew were helpful and nice. I dove with Julian, the dive master, who I would dive with anywhere anytime, and we enjoyed the presence of camille, the owner, who lit up the place with her positive energies. I've been on fancier boats, but I enjoyed this one much better.Posted on Google![]()

Safe, clean, friendly staff always willing to help, easy on and off the boat, good dive sites. Guides are awesome. The dive crew very accommodating. Nice camera room. Keep the same tank entire trip. Some sites we went in small groups in a dingy. The return the dingy would slowly pull you back. Thankful we did nit have to struggle getting back in the dingy Some times we would just float back to the boat. We were divided into groups so everyone wasn’t getting ready at the same time. Plenty of food and snacks. Only complaint is the chairs and beds are hard as cement. Compared to the good stuff that was nothing. I would for sure go again.Posted on Google![]()

We did seven days on the Smiling Seahorse level over. The crew the boat everything was amazing. The divers did 20+ dives and as a snooker we did four snorkels, which was totally unexpected and so delightful. Took us to some of the best Dive spots in the world and the pictures proved that’s true. The food on board was over the top!! I would recommend this trip to anybody around the world!Posted on Google![]()

I just returned from a week-long liveaboard with the club, and the experience was simply outstanding. The entire team demonstrated high professionalism throughout, with in-depth safety briefings and modern, well-maintained equipment. A special thanks to our amazing dive guides: James, Velika, Katie, and Mint. Each of them brought great energy and uncompromising expertise. Thanks to them, we felt in safe hands during every dive, and they knew exactly how to lead us to the most beautiful spots in the pristine sites we visited. The boat was very comfortable, and the excellent food between dives rounded out the experience perfectly. This is without a doubt a top-tier diving club, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a week of peace and world-class diving!"Posted on Google![]()

Amazing company to go diving with. They picked us up at Koh Phayam even though they are based in Ranong, and helped us organize our transport onwards from Ranong after the trip. James organizes everything with a steady hand and a twinkle in the eye. You will not be bored during briefings on the smiling sea horse. Our guide, Veli Ka, was just amazing as well. So full of knowledge and safe and fun to dive with. All the crew were really nice - seems like a great work environment. The boat itself was really comfortable with a big lounge, sun deck, AC rooms with private bathrooms. Not crowded at all. The food was mouth watering as well. 5 stars!
