16. Franck Fogarolo – The Smiling Seahorse

Of course, we couldn’t write an article about underwater photographers without mentioning our own photographer: Franck Fogarolo, our cruise director and co-owner of The Smiling Seahorse. He brings back sublime photographs from each trip, documenting the underwater world we explore throughout the Andaman Sea and the Mergui Archipelago.

If you would like to discover more of his work, we regularly share his photographs in our weekly blogposts.

Underwater Photography in the Mergui Archipelago

The Mergui Archipelago is an extraordinary destination for underwater photographers. Located in the Andaman Sea, this remote region of Myanmar is made up of hundreds of islands surrounded by clear water, reefs and pinnacles rich in marine life.

One of the reasons we love this area so much is its feeling of exclusivity. On many dives, our liveaboard may be one of the few boats in the area, giving photographers more freedom to compose their images without having another diver unexpectedly swimming through the frame.

For photographers, reaching these remote dive sites is best done by liveaboard. A dedicated Myanmar diving trip allows you to spend several days exploring different sites while keeping your camera system ready for everything from wide-angle reef scenes to small marine life and unusual encounters.

Preparing for an underwater photography liveaboard also requires more planning than a conventional diving holiday. Camera housing, batteries, chargers, memory cards, lighting equipment, spare parts and freshwater rinsing all need to be considered before departure.

That is why we created our dedicated guide for photographers planning to explore this exceptional part of the Andaman Sea.
