Exploring the North Andaman: Surin, Richelieu Rock and the Similan Islands

Embarking on an expedition through the enchanting waters of the North Andaman Sea brought together nine avid ocean lovers from America, France, Germany, Holland and China. Although they came from different corners of the world, they quickly discovered a shared language beneath the surface: a passion for diving and an irresistible curiosity about the underwater world.

The voyage was a wonderful blend of cultural diversity and underwater exploration, with each dive revealing another chapter in the remarkable marine landscapes of the North Andaman.

Starting the adventure in Surin National Park

Our expedition began with a check dive in Surin National Park, a beautiful introduction to the underwater environment that awaited us over the following days.

The first dive revealed an impressive underwater landscape filled with vibrant corals and an abundance of reef life. Colourful fish moved through the reef while the coral formations created a spectacular backdrop for the beginning of our adventure.

It was the perfect way to settle into the rhythm of the cruise, with the group quickly getting into the spirit of exploration and discovery.

Richelieu Rock: a spectacular underwater metropolis

From Surin, we made a swift transition to the legendary Richelieu Rock, where the diving became even more exhilarating.

Richelieu Rock is famous for its extraordinary concentration of marine life, and our dives certainly delivered. The divers were surrounded by soft corals, enormous curtains of glassfish and a constant stream of activity.

Schools of barracuda added movement to the scene, while long-nosed emperor fish and blue-fin trevally moved through the reef. Everywhere we looked, there seemed to be something happening. The site felt less like a single rock beneath the sea and more like a busy underwater metropolis, alive with movement and colour.

For the macro lovers in the group, the reefs also offered plenty of opportunities to slow down and search for smaller treasures. Nudibranchs were among the highlights, adding flashes of colour and intricate detail to the underwater scenery. You can discover more about these fascinating creatures in our guide to nudibranchs of the Andaman Sea.

Between the larger schools of fish and the tiny creatures hiding among the corals, every dive offered something different to discover.

From Richelieu Rock to the Similan Islands

The journey then continued towards the Similan National Park, another jewel of the Andaman Sea.

Here, the underwater environment changed once again. The Similan Islands offered an immaculate aquatic sanctuary, with colourful reefs and an impressive variety of marine life. Keen-eyed divers searched the reef for smaller creatures while also enjoying the larger schools of fish moving through the blue.

Nudibranchs, elusive lobsters and a remarkable variety of reef fish provided plenty of opportunities for observation and photography. For a group with such a strong interest in the underwater world, each dive became an opportunity to look a little closer and discover something new.

The contrast between the different dive sites was one of the pleasures of the expedition. From the bustling marine life of Richelieu Rock to the colourful coral landscapes of the Similan Islands, the North Andaman continued to reveal new underwater scenery from one dive to the next.

Blackwater diving and night-time exploration

Night diving also proved to be a highlight of the cruise, with the darkness revealing a completely different side of the Andaman Sea.

For most of our guests, the cruise was also their very first opportunity to experience blackwater diving. Drifting in open water at night in search of creatures that rise towards the surface from the deep is unlike any other type of diving, and it added an exciting new dimension to the expedition.

After a full day of exploring reefs and searching for marine life, heading back into the darkness for a night dive offered another chance to discover something unexpected.

A shared passion for the ocean

As the sun set on the final day, the memories of the expedition were already becoming part of the group’s shared story.

This journey through the North Andaman was about much more than visiting famous dive sites. It was about experiencing the underwater world together, sharing discoveries and creating connections between people who had travelled from very different parts of the world.

Each dive added another piece to the adventure: vibrant coral reefs, schooling fish, macro life, night dives and the excitement of trying blackwater diving for the first time. The diversity of the underwater experiences was matched by the diversity of the group itself.

This escapade into the depths of the North Andaman’s aquatic realm not only fuelled a passion for adventure but also fostered a profound respect for the mysteries concealed beneath the ocean’s surface.

The voyage was not merely an excursion. It was an immersive journey into a world that continues to inspire curiosity, exploration and a desire to return. For these nine divers, the underwater wonders of the North Andaman left behind more than photographs and stories: they created a shared camaraderie forged through the breathtaking beauty of the sea.

As the nine intrepid souls departed, they carried with them stories of their dives, memories of the people they had met and an insatiable appetite for future adventures. They left with a promise to return, drawn once again by the siren call of the unexplored depths of the Andaman Sea.
