South Mergui Archipelago Dive Cruise: Incredible Visibility and Amazing Encounters
Our latest dive cruise took us to the southern part of the Mergui Archipelago, where we enjoyed nine? days? Wait no source duration. We should not invent. Need remove. Let’s craft.
Our latest dive cruise took us to the southern part of the Mergui Archipelago, where we were delighted to welcome a wonderful international group of guests. François was our Frenchie, Patricia joined us from Switzerland, Claes and Ponthus came from Sweden, Veebeke and Henrietta from Norway, and Pam travelled from the USA. We also had David and Krista from Australia, along with a really fun Spanish team: Gregorio, Luis, Rosa and our favourite snorkeller, Mercedes, always recognisable by her swimming cap!
The atmosphere on board was fantastic throughout the cruise. Between dives, everyone enjoyed relaxing together, sharing stories and making the most of life at sea. And, of course, no Smiling Seahorse trip would be complete without our traditional barbecue and Ti’ Punch.
Perfect Conditions for Diving in the Southern Mergui Archipelago
We were particularly lucky with the conditions. The sea was incredibly calm and almost completely flat, while the underwater visibility was exceptional. With so little surface movement and such clear water, the reefs looked even more impressive and our dives around the southern Mergui Archipelago were a real pleasure.

The combination of calm seas, excellent visibility and remote dive sites created ideal conditions for exploring the underwater world of the Mergui Archipelago. Every dive seemed to offer something different, from schools of fish and colourful reef life to fascinating macro subjects hidden among the rocks and corals.

Close Encounters with Nurse Sharks
And then came some particularly memorable encounters…
Nurse sharks!
We were lucky enough to encounter nurse sharks during our dives, giving our guests some fantastic opportunities to observe and photograph these impressive animals underwater. Nurse sharks are one of the encounters that can make diving in remote parts of Myanmar particularly memorable, especially when several appear during the same dive.

For some divers, being surrounded by sharks can be a little intimidating. Agnes, for example, was not particularly comfortable around sharks, but she found herself surrounded by them during the cruise and still managed to have a great time. That is part of the magic of liveaboard diving: sometimes the most unexpected encounters become the stories you remember most.
More Marine Life Beneath the Surface
The sharks were far from the only stars of the cruise. The reefs were packed with smaller subjects for keen-eyed divers and underwater photographers. We encountered colourful reef life, cowries, pipefish and seahorses, while the excellent visibility made it possible to appreciate the scenery around every subject.

Macro lovers had plenty to keep them busy, while larger reef scenes provided a completely different perspective. This variety is one of the great attractions of Myanmar diving: a single cruise can combine wide-angle reef scenes with tiny and fascinating marine creatures.
Not Only the Seahorses Were Smiling
Of course, the seahorses also made an appearance. These delicate animals are always a favourite among divers, and spotting one underwater often turns an ordinary dive into a memorable one.

But there was plenty more to discover. The combination of colourful reefs, unusual macro subjects and encounters with larger marine animals made this cruise a fantastic showcase of the biodiversity found in the remote Mergui Archipelago.
A Memorable Mergui Archipelago Dive Cruise

To sum it up, it was simply awesome!
Great diving, exceptional visibility, calm seas, fantastic marine life and, most importantly, a wonderful group of people made this a cruise to remember. From the relaxed moments on board to the nurse shark encounters underwater, the southern Mergui Archipelago delivered everything we could have hoped for.
Thank you all for sharing this adventure with us. We hope to see you again soon on board the MV Smiling Seahorse for another exploration of Myanmar’s spectacular underwater world.
