Burma Banks Sharks, Dolphins and Macro Life: An Amazing Week of Diving in Myanmar

What a great team this week!

With good weather and a flat sea, we reached the Burma Banks easily and enjoyed two amazing days of diving in around 40 metres of visibility. The underwater conditions were exceptional, with crystal-clear water and an incredible variety of marine life.

We encountered plenty of sharks, including nurse sharks, silvertip reef sharks and grey reef sharks, as well as some impressive rays. There were big marbled stingrays, a huge mangrove whipray and plenty of Kuhl’s stingrays cruising around the banks.

Dolphins Join Us During the Surface Interval

During one of our surface intervals, we had another fantastic encounter. A pod of around 20 dolphins came to visit us.

It is hard to complain about a surface interval when you have a pod of dolphins swimming nearby!

Macro Diving in the Mergui Archipelago

Back in the Mergui Archipelago, it was time to switch our attention to the macro lovers.

We spotted different kinds of frogfish, including giant frogfish and spotfin frogfish, as well as plenty of different crabs, including a candy crab.

And, of course, we couldn’t forget our mascot: the lovely seahorse. We were lucky enough to spot seahorses at multiple dive sites in the southern part of the Mergui Archipelago.

A Cardinalfish with Eggs in Its Mouth

And without forgetting the cardinalfish, Franck finally managed to get a shot of this fascinating fish carrying its eggs in its mouth!

Male cardinalfish are known for their unusual mouthbrooding behaviour, making this kind of observation particularly special for underwater photographers and marine-life enthusiasts.

A Final Dive at Dendro’s Peak

We changed our itinerary slightly this week so that we could finish the trip with a dive at one of our favourite dive sites: Dendro’s Peak.

It was a pure festival of fish — and there were so many rays!

Chevron barracuda, yellowtail barracuda and great barracuda were joined by bigeye trevally, bluefin trevally and golden trevally, often gathering in large schools.

And just when we thought the dive couldn’t get any better, a mobula ray joined us during the safety stop.

Just WOW!

Another Amazing Week in the Mergui Archipelago

From spectacular shark encounters at the Burma Banks to dolphins at the surface, fascinating macro life and huge schools of fish at Dendro’s Peak, this was another unforgettable week of diving in Myanmar.

We can’t wait for the next trip and the next underwater adventure!
