5 Benefits of Scuba Diving: Why Diving Is Good for You

Scuba diving is much more than exploring the underwater world. It can also be a wonderful way to relax, stay active, build confidence and connect with other people. From the calming effect of breathing underwater to the friendships made between dives, here are five reasons why diving can be good for both body and mind.

1. Diving can help reduce stress

One of the many benefits of diving is its relaxing nature. Once you are underwater, it is time to slow down and leave the daily hustle and bustle behind. You float weightlessly in a unique environment often described as the world of silence, surrounded by nothing but the sound of your own breathing.

Controlled breathing is an important part of scuba diving and encourages you to breathe slowly and steadily. Combined with the feeling of weightlessness and the focus required underwater, this can make diving a wonderfully calming experience.

In fact, the connection between breathing, relaxation and diving is something we explored in our article about diving and yoga.

2. Diving keeps you active and fit

Diving is not just a hobby… it is also a physical activity! Swimming against currents, carrying your equipment, finning through the water and maintaining your position underwater all require energy and body control.

The amount of energy you use during a dive depends on many factors, including water temperature, current, depth, equipment and your own level of activity. Rather than focusing on a single calorie figure, it is fair to say that scuba diving can provide a useful workout while remaining relatively gentle on the body.

Because the water supports much of your body weight, scuba diving is generally considered a low-impact activity. It allows you to stay active without placing the same type of repetitive impact on your joints as some land-based sports.

3. Diving can boost self-confidence

You might be surprised to hear that scuba diving can also help build confidence. Learning to manage your equipment, control your buoyancy, navigate underwater and deal calmly with new situations gives you the opportunity to develop new skills one dive at a time.

The buddy system is another important part of recreational diving. Trust between dive buddies is essential for safe diving, and as you gain confidence in your buddy and your buddy gains confidence in you, that shared responsibility can strengthen your own confidence underwater.

Every successful dive can be another small achievement: mastering a new skill, becoming more comfortable in the water or simply discovering that you are capable of doing something that once seemed intimidating.

4. Diving means spending time in seawater and sunlight

There is something wonderfully refreshing about spending time by the sea. Swimming in seawater, enjoying the sunshine and being surrounded by nature can make a diving holiday feel like a complete break from everyday life.

Sunlight is one of the body’s natural sources of vitamin D, which plays an important role in calcium absorption and normal bone health. At the same time, time spent outdoors can contribute to a general feeling of wellbeing and relaxation.

Of course, more sun is not necessarily better. During a dive trip, remember to protect yourself from excessive sun exposure with shade, appropriate clothing and reef-friendly sun protection where possible.

5. Diving is a great way to socialise

I don’t know about you, but when I’m all sweaty at the gym, I’m not necessarily in the mood for a chat! After a dive, however, I love talking about the shared experience with my dive buddy and comparing what we saw underwater.

And this is one of the things I love most about dive trips: you meet people who already share your passion for the underwater world. On a liveaboard, you spend several days diving, eating, relaxing and swapping stories with fellow divers. Some of those dive buddies can quickly become lifelong friends.

  1. Yeh shark bites are accidents not attacks. Just like human fishing industries that fish up sharks do it accidentally, not like any weirdo would want to eat flake or anything lol.
