Great trip with “Les Stephanois”
Diving the Mergui Archipelago and Black Rock
The Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar is a spectacular destination for liveaboard diving, with remote reefs, dramatic pinnacles and an extraordinary variety of marine life. On this trip, a group of French divers chartered the boat and headed north towards Black Rock, one of the most remote and exciting dive sites in the archipelago.
We had another great trip this week with a group of French divers who chartered the boat to dive in the Mergui Archipelago. We went all the way up north to Black Rock and had a blast!
Usually when you see a cobia up there, you look carefully in the blue for a bigger fish. They are known to choose infamous travel companions such as the giant blotched sting rays, manta rays or whale sharks. This time, they were travelling as a school, with more than 30 of them coming close for a good look at us.

In the smallest and most colourful part of the range, we encountered again a few pairs of harlequin shrimps — I must admit they are some of the most amazing underwater photo models, showing off their funny shape and bright colours.
At North Twin Pinnacle, a barramundi was spotted! What a lovely grouper! They are quite shy, and this is the best picture Franck ever got of one of them before it disappeared into a darker corner…
The Mergui Archipelago is particularly rewarding for divers who enjoy looking for unusual and well-camouflaged marine life. From ghost pipefish and harlequin shrimp to large pelagic encounters, every dive can bring a surprise.
