Oceanic Manta Rays at Black Rock – Mergui Archipelago
Another amazing trip in the Mergui Archipelago, where we got the chance to meet some oceanic manta rays!
What an amazing feeling to spend three dives at Black Rock with at least five different curious specimens dancing around us the whole time underwater!

Exploring the northern Mergui Archipelago
This was our first exploration trip of the season, cruising around Tower Rock to discover some new dive sites, and it was an exciting experience!
The landscape in the north of the Mergui Archipelago was stunning. The group of divers from northern France, Marcq Plongée, were impressed by the diversity of the underwater life.
Some turtles, different kinds of sharks — nurse sharks, white-tip sharks and bamboo sharks — as well as marbled and bluespotted stingrays were among the big animals we encountered.
We also found some beautiful macro critters: stonefish, octopuses and cuttlefish, as well as many different kinds of shrimps, including the almost invisible skeleton shrimp.
There were some cute and tiny frogfish hiding among the sea fans and barrel sponges.
And finally, the ghost pipefish were back! We could count 14 individuals, while their friends, the seahorses, were still there too — no fewer than 13 different ones!
And of course, we also had the chance to meet the spectacular harlequin shrimp!
We are looking forward to the end of the month and heading back to the north of the archipelago to explore other virgin islands.
Diving Black Rock and the Mergui Archipelago
Black Rock is one of the remote dive sites of the Mergui Archipelago and can offer encounters with some of the Andaman Sea’s most impressive pelagic species, including oceanic manta rays, sharks and rays.
