With a total of 29 exhilarating dives scheduled along the west coast of Thailand, our journey spanned from the Malaysian border to the Myanmar border.
Commencing on the 18th of February in Phuket and concluding on the 26th of February in Tap Lamu, our expedition welcomed a diverse group of marine enthusiasts from around the globe.
Our journey was dedicated to learning about the rich marine biodiversity of the Andaman Sea while immersing ourselves in the vibrant underwater landscape of Thailand's Andaman Sea.
This liveaboard adventure offered more than just unparalleled diving experiences! Through daily presentations by Gavin Miller, we uncovered some really cool mysteries of the ocean and gained insights into the delicate balance of the marine Ecosystem.
Gavin Miller and Global Reef: Advocates for Marine Conservation
We were thrilled to welcome Gavin Miller aboard The Smiling Seahorse for our first Marine Science expedition and decided to make it an annual occurrence together with our Whale Shark expedition and Manta Ray expeditions. Our collaboration with Gavin Miller, a distinguished British Marine biologist, working for Global Reef in Thailand, added an enriching dimension to our experience aboard The Smiling Seahorse. Gavin's extensive knowledge and passion for marine biology infused our journey with a deeper understanding of the intricate marine ecosystem and the need to protect it! Throughout the expedition, Gavin delivered a series of engaging presentations that covered a wide range of topics, each shedding light on different aspects of marine life and conservation. We delved into the pressing issue of marine plastic pollution, learning about its detrimental effects on ocean health. Gavin highlighted the critical need for collective action to address this growing threat and shared tips on how individuals can reduce their plastic footprint. In addition to plastic pollution, Gavin explored the fascinating world of symbiotic relationships within coral reef ecosystems. We learned about the intricate partnerships between different species, from coral and algae to clownfish and anemones, and gained a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of marine life. |
Cooperative hunting behaviors and communication on the reef were also topics of exploration, revealing the complex social dynamics at play within marine communities. Gavin's presentations illuminated the various ways in which animals collaborate and communicate to secure food resources and defend territories.
As we delved deeper into the realm of marine competition and contests, Gavin provided fascinating insights into the strategies employed by different species to gain a competitive edge. From aggressive displays to elaborate courtship rituals, we gained a newfound appreciation for the diversity of behaviors exhibited by marine organisms.
Overall, Gavin's presentations were both educational and thought-provoking, inspiring us to reflect on our role in marine conservation and the urgent need to protect our oceans. His passion for marine biology was contagious, leaving a lasting impression on all of us and reaffirming the importance of our expedition's mission.
We started in the South of the Andaman Sea of Thailand, close to Malaysia
Our first check dive was at Koh Haa, located within the boundaries of Lanta National Park, where our dive offered a glimpse into the underwater wonders that awaited us in the days ahead.
With everyone geared up and ready, we ventured next to Hin Deang and Hin Muang, also known as the Red and Purple Rocks, situated in the open ocean. These magnificent rock formations, adorned with colorful soft coral, served as the backdrop for three exhilarating dives. As we explored the vibrant reef, we were greeted by schools of Red Tooth Triggerfish, Chevron Barracuda, and Red Snapper, accompanied by the occasional sighting of Golden Trevally and Tuna Mackerel.
Continuing our exploration, we ventured to Tarutao National Park, where two dive sites named "Stonehenge" and "Talarang Steps" awaited us. Here, amidst the intricate coral formations, we encountered a diverse array of marine life, from Seahorses and Pipefish to Ghost Pipefish and Coral Cat Sharks. Each dive offered a unique opportunity to observe these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat.
