5th of march 2024 trip report
As the sun broke over the horizon, casting its golden glow upon the tranquil waters of the Andaman Sea, we embarked on yet another thrilling adventure into the depths of the Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar. With anticipation bubbling within us like the bubbles escaping from our regulators, we set sail, eager to discover the wonders that lay beneath the azure surface. This marked our third expedition back to the captivating waters of Myanmar since the border closed in 2019, and it remains an absolute privilege to rediscover the solitude amidst the 800 islands that render this destination a veritable diver's paradise.

Setting Sail for Adventure

Our journey began on March 5th, as we welcomed aboard a diverse group of passionate divers hailing from all corners of the globe – France, Belgium, Brazil, UAE, Sweden, Switzerland, Israel. With excitement coursing through our veins, we eagerly anticipated the surprises that awaited us amidst the 800 magical islands of the Mergui Archipelago.

Unveiling Underwater Marvels

Our first day submerged us into a world of wonder at High Rock, where the mystical allure of the ocean greeted us with the sight of not one, but two seahorses on our check dive. Venturing forth to Dragon Islands, we navigated through three enchanting swim-through before encountering a majestic eagle ray and a colossal 4-meter nurse shark peacefully slumbering beneath the rocky alcoves of Tower Rock. It was a sight to behold, one that left us in awe of the ocean's grandeur.

However, amidst this awe-inspiring beauty, we were reminded of the importance of caution as one of our fellow divers without any apparent reasons, suddenly showed symptoms of Pulmonary Oedema. Swiftly taking action, we ensured his safety by returning to land after the third dive, for him to get medical attention. I'm super happy to announce that his condition wasn't too serious and that he is already fully recovered as I write this blogpost.

Scuba diving accidents, though infrequent, serve as sobering reminders of the importance of having the right people by your side. Being equipped with the knowledge, equipment and skills to recognize and respond to diving injuries (even in the most remote parts of the word) can make all the difference in critical moments. At The Smiling Seahorse, we take pride in our rigorous training, continuous education, and unwavering commitment to safety protocols. Rest assured, when you dive with us, you're not just exploring the depths – you're in the hands of seasoned professionals who prioritize your safety above all else.

To ensure our passengers didn't miss another dive, our boat sailed through the night, traveling to Kawthoung and back, so we could be back on time for the 7 am dive the next morning. A big thank you goes to our dedicated crew onboard who drove the boat an extra 14 hours that night showing once more their unwavering dedication to punctuality and reliability.

Thrills and Wonders Beneath the Waves

The following days unfolded like chapters in a captivating saga, each dive site revealing its own unique treasures. From the mysterious depths of Shark Cave to the vibrant coral gardens of Western Rocky, we were treated to an underwater spectacle unlike any other. Seahorses, ghost pipefish, and anemone-clad critters adorned the reefs, while the graceful movements of Manta and the stealthy presence of sharks added an exhilarating edge to our adventures. Discovering Hidden Gems

Amidst the thrill of exploration, we found moments of serenity amidst the natural beauty of the archipelago. From the sea gypsies village, where we climbed to the temple for a breathtaking panorama, to the pristine beaches where turquoise waters beckoned us for a refreshing swim, each moment ashore was a treasure to be cherished.

Farewell to Another Adventure

As our journey drew to a close, we reflected on the memories forged and friendships formed amidst the vast expanse of the Andaman Sea. From heart-shaped lagoons to bustling coral gardens, the Mergui Archipelago had once again woven its magic upon us, leaving us yearning for the next chapter of exploration.

In conclusion, our dive trip to the Mergui Archipelago was nothing short of extraordinary. With its diverse marine life, stunning landscapes, and warm camaraderie, it's no wonder that this hidden gem has captured the hearts of divers around the world. So, until our next underwater escapade, may the seas continue to beckon us with their siren song of adventure and discovery.
With that said, we received a cancellation on the last cruise to Myanmar this season starting on the 9th of May, get in touch if you'd like to explore this untouched paradise before the word come out...

Bon voyage and happy diving!
Note: Remember, diving is not just about exploring the depths; it's also about having fun and making memories. So, dive in with a sense of adventure and a sprinkle of humor, and you're sure to have a whale of a time!

trip report 28th february 2024 north andaman liveaboard in surin and similan islands
This week we had a short trip in the North Andaman Sea, and it was a pleasure to welcoming onboard an old friend from the UAE, Chris, who used to own a dive center where Franck and I (Camille) did our very first dives as a buddy pair!
It was also a pleasure welcoming back onboard Marshal and Noi on their 9th cruise with us (a big thank you for your continuous support throughout the years). And it was also time to make new friends from the UAE, Brazil, USA, Taiwan, France and Ireland.
Thanks to all of you for trusting us for your holidays :)

Beginning at Tap Lamu pier and concluding in Ranong, our long-established home port, this itinerary offered a great snapshot of What thailand has to offer, culminating with the infamous Richelieu Rock.

Throughout this memorable cruise, the wonders of the Andaman Sea continued to amaze us. Our underwater explorations introduced us to a diverse array of marine creatures, delighting both new and seasoned divers alike. From the psychedelic Batwing sea slug, gracefully hiding among purple sponges, to the impressive schools of trevallies and emperors, the marine life surrounding us painted a vivid tapestry of colors and movement. A family of Clark clownfish is getting ready to welcome new member and their mum was seen gently blowing on her eggs.
We were fortunate to yellow goatfish and giant moray eels on the reef, while giant lobsters peeked out from their hidden crevices, offering us a glimpse into their secret world.

Our journey brought us face-to-face with fascinating creatures such as a ghost pipefish carrying eggs and the brightly colored yet elusive Pikachu nudibranch. Their intricate forms and ability to blend seamlessly with their surroundings left us in awe of nature's ingenuity. The vibrant yellow margin triggerfish and the charming pufferfish added bursts of color to our underwater encounters. Not to be forgotten, the mantis shrimp and the porcelain crab (in its anemone) showcased the fascinating diversity of crustaceans that call the Andaman Sea home.

marine science expedition 2024
This week marked another exciting themed expedition aboard The Smiling Seahorse, as we had the pleasure of hosting a distinguished British Marine biologist for our annual Marine Science expedition: Gavin Miller
With a total of 29 exhilarating dives scheduled along the west coast of Thailand, our journey spanned from the Malaysian border to the Myanmar border.

Commencing on the 18th of February in Phuket and concluding on the 26th of February in Tap Lamu, our expedition welcomed a diverse group of marine enthusiasts from around the globe.
Our journey was dedicated to learning about the rich marine biodiversity of the Andaman Sea while immersing ourselves in the vibrant underwater landscape of Thailand's Andaman Sea.
This liveaboard adventure offered more than just unparalleled diving experiences! Through daily presentations by Gavin Miller, we uncovered some really cool mysteries of the ocean and gained insights into the delicate balance of the marine Ecosystem.

We were thrilled to welcome Gavin Miller aboard The Smiling Seahorse for our first Marine Science expedition and decided to make it an annual occurrence together with our Whale Shark expedition and Manta Ray expeditions.

Our collaboration with Gavin Miller, a distinguished British Marine biologist, working for Global Reef in Thailand, added an enriching dimension to our experience aboard The Smiling Seahorse.
Gavin's extensive knowledge and passion for marine biology infused our journey with a deeper understanding of the intricate marine ecosystem and the need to protect it!

Throughout the expedition, Gavin delivered a series of engaging presentations that covered a wide range of topics, each shedding light on different aspects of marine life and conservation. We delved into the pressing issue of marine plastic pollution, learning about its detrimental effects on ocean health.
Gavin highlighted the critical need for collective action to address this growing threat and shared tips on how individuals can reduce their plastic footprint.

In addition to plastic pollution, Gavin explored the fascinating world of symbiotic relationships within coral reef ecosystems. We learned about the intricate partnerships between different species, from coral and algae to clownfish and anemones, and gained a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of marine life.
Gavin also delved into the diverse adaptations employed by marine creatures for predation and survival. From camouflage and mimicry to venomous stings and defensive behaviors, we gained insights into the ingenious strategies that enable species to thrive in their respective environments and it was so interesting to recognise these behaviours during the subsequent dives!
Cooperative hunting behaviors and communication on the reef were also topics of exploration, revealing the complex social dynamics at play within marine communities. Gavin's presentations illuminated the various ways in which animals collaborate and communicate to secure food resources and defend territories.
As we delved deeper into the realm of marine competition and contests, Gavin provided fascinating insights into the strategies employed by different species to gain a competitive edge. From aggressive displays to elaborate courtship rituals, we gained a newfound appreciation for the diversity of behaviors exhibited by marine organisms.
Overall, Gavin's presentations were both educational and thought-provoking, inspiring us to reflect on our role in marine conservation and the urgent need to protect our oceans. His passion for marine biology was contagious, leaving a lasting impression on all of us and reaffirming the importance of our expedition's mission.
